It's a cuff button but at least it's military (merchant navy?)

I think someone on Tnet found a couple earlier this year and there was a question as to whether they were Royal Navy/Continental or merchant navy. Either way, it's better than the many plain flat buttons, that I've been digging.

Back in March I found a U.S. Navy coat button about 20' away (also pictured) so I'm wondering if they might have come from the same garment.

Nice finds. The first one is a British merchant marine button, about 1790 and just later in time.

Nice way to break the drought. Congrats!

I read DocBeav's post from February and saw CRUSADER's comment, that said the same thing. http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/t...week-2-x-revolutionary-war-naval-buttons.html

I'm very curious about mine, because the button could add to our understanding of the site.

With cuff buttons, such as this, I wonder if they weren't almost generic, used for multiple types of naval uniforms.

Here is the source the I was looking at:

These seem to to a fairly common type but no-one has a 100% positive ID on them. All we really know is that they are late 18th C.

Thanks for weighing in CRUSADER!

I'm not sure why I said that an ID could tell us something about the site. If anything, it would likely add to the mystery. We've found a British Revolutionary War button, a loyalist button, a couple of U.S. Navy buttons from the 1790's, a post Revolutionary British artillery button and a number of U.S. War of 1812 era buttons. There's an interesting history in there - just don't know exactly what it is.
