18th Century Spanish Olive Jar?

Found this piece scuba diving the cape fear river a few months back. I was told it was a type of amphora used by the Spanish as olive jars and wine vessels during their expedition to the Americas. I believe that this is what they are but I haven't heard of any being found off the atlantic ocean besides Florida. Anybody know any more information on these?
