1913 Barber dime ~ OLD GOLD RING ~ UPDATED 2-13-08

I took the gold ring to the local coin & jewelry shop to have them evaluate it. It tests at 14K and weights 8.8 grams! NICE!!!

I met Ron downtown again today to do some detecting! The weather wasn't as nice & sunny as yesterday ~ but the rain held off for us!

Today I dug:

6 clad quarters
30 clad dimes
2 nickels
75 Memorial cents
3 Wheat cents ~ '38-S, '57-D, '58-D
1913 Barber Dime
old gold ring (looks home-made)
"skill" token ??

The Barber dime was in a bunch of dirt/mud that was left behind from a site where a house was just removed. Ron called me from the site to invite me there to detect with him ~ I just arrived at the site and within just a couple swings I got a nice penny/dime signal ~ I bent down to dig and I saw the silver edge sticking out from a clump of dirt! a 1913 Barber Dime! SWEET! Then just a few feet away I dug the gold ring! It's not marked inside the band ~ it looks like a home-made job to me. I bet it weights atleast 5 grams.

The token is one I've never seen before ~ it's about the size of a US nickel ~ one side reads, THIS TOKEN REWARDED FOR SKILL with a big R in the middle . . . . . and the other side reads,THIS TOKEN HAS NO CASH OR TRADE VALUE and another big R in the middle. Anyone ever see one of these?

Congrats on some great finds. That ring is super cool. I found one of those "R" skill tokens last year. Here is what PBK responded on mine.

The token is an arcade or pinball token, and is listed in the "Mfgr. Stock Initial Tokens" section of Alpert & Smith's book, Video Arcade, Pinball, Slot Machine, and Other Amusement Tokens of North America. The same design was produced with various other letters in the center. Some collectors believe it to be one of the many c. 1930's-40's Minnesota pinball tokens produced by the Northwestern Stamp Works of St. Paul. However, documentation is lacking.

Yeah, very sweet. Nice barber and GOLD. Nothing like finding a couple good finds right at the beginning of the hunt to get you motivated.

Sweet looking dime.. Awesome finds. You should have posted a pic of all the clad and Wheaties too. Most of us especially myself enjoy seeing those nice little piles of coins...

Super - D - Duper! I have yet to find any silver dimes, ... soon! did find a 1946 nickle today! cant wait to find a good place to hunt, need to find an old park near home!

You never know where those good finds are going to come from, but it looks like you know what to detect when you see it. Dirt piles left behind from home sites are definite "detect" spots.
