I picked up a handful of wheaties this morning, along with a couple of other goodies. I don't really collect wheaties so I was at a bit of a lose as to what are key dates, condition rarities, etc. That being said I'm not completely clueless either. So we pulled out a nice 1909 VDB, a really nice 1911-D that is unfortunately unpleasantly toned, a 1926-S that I didn't realize was a rarer date in VG8 - F12 condition and the prize of the lot is a 1913-D in really nice condition. I looked at PCGS photo grade and the coin appears to in MS condition, I'm guessing 61-62ish but I have no confidence at all in my assessment. The two marks on the jacket appear on every 1913-D I found online so I don't know if it's design element or a die marker for the date. Any thoughts on grade (or value) are greatly appreciated. If I'm way off base on my thoughts it won't hurt my feelings.

I paid nearly $0.04 apiece for them so I think I'm in a pretty good spot on them.

Thanks for looking.

I think you're in the right area for grade. That's one beautiful coin! I don't know who's selling them at that price, but go back and clean him out!

I'm more inclined to give it an AU grade. 55 or maybe 58.

Enamel / Cudamark - I appreciate the opinions, thanks.

Enamel - Actually I pulled these out of a bucket of maybe 1,500 wheaties. I rummaged through the bucket, but very effectively. I guess I probably should go back, give the guy $60 and take the rest of them. I can always resell them for about the same about so very little risk. Tomorrow I'll pick them all up and will let you know if I find anything else worth mentioning. In addition to the coins listed we found a handful of BU 50's wheats, a couple BU's from the 20's, 30's and 40's, 3 BU steel cents that I don't believe have been recoated. Also found quite a few mint marked coins from the '10s, '20s and 30s. The more I'm typing here the more it is obvious that I need to go buy them all and try to find one more nice coin. Thanks.

Any additional thoughts on grades (or value) are appreciated.

I honestly agree that the coin would likely receive a Mint State grade and might even go MS-63 Red/Brown! The only thing holding it back is the contact scratches and minor wear on the Obverse. Remember, Graders assess both the Obverse and Reverse as well as the Rims and usually apply an Overall grade unless the Obverse and Reverse grades (conditions) are too far apart. If that happens, then they give a coin a Net Grade.

Thanks Frank, appreciate it. On photo grade I think its certainly a possibility to go that high.

So as Enamel suggested I went back back on bought the rest of the wheaties today. Found another 1913-D, this time an XF40 of so example, a 1912-D in AG, a 1953 impaired proof, a 1933-D in VF20, a 1931 in VF20, AU 1919-S, AU 1924 and a VF 1951 with a clip. Also found 50-60 earlier mint marked or high grade later date coins that I'll be keeping. I do think it's odd that the 2 best coins in the lot were both 1913-D's. If I can move the rest of the coins for $0.04 or so I'll be a happy man.

UPDATE - got this coin back from NGC today. Graded at a MS-62 BN. Very pleased with it.
