i wouldn't get it slabbed unless you plan on selling it for profit.

A coin like that is always worth slabbing in my book. To me if the coin is worth 2x the cost of grading its worth it. Plus you'll get all the satisfaction of knowing if its real, grade and it looks really nice in display cases

Assuming it's legit, then yes, he'd want to sell it for profit. I'd really be on the horns of a dilemma, trying to figure out if I'd really want to spend big bucks on the coin, though I'm sure he'd cut me a deal. Right now, top priority is establishing the coin's legitimacy. I'm quite certain it's a 1916-D, the only question is whether it's real; I've read that these coins were counterfeited extensively, though the amount of wear on the coin, and knowing it's sat in a closet for 25 years (ie - before Ebay) has me hopeful...

I just sold a 1916d and it was ag
I doubt this is a counterfeit, since its in the shape it is.
I can see a faint mint mark and if I were you/him I'd just take it to a local coin shop and see if they would buy it. (Let them assume responsibility)
I wouldn't expect to get much more than $200-$225 the way it sits.
If its sent off to grade there's a chance they may not authenticate it

it looks like a d, i wouldn't get it slabbed as the price wouldn't be a high one anyway due to it's physical contition.
