1949 jefferson nickel possible D over S

Is this a D over S or am I seeing things. Its a bit dirty near the mintmark but don't want to clean it if it is the error.
The D looks a little crooked to me too.

anyway to safely clean out the black crud without damaging it?

I do not have a pic of the D/S mark on the 49 but if it is anything like the 55 D/S I would say yes to your question.

This is why I asked what year. The pic of your coin looks just like a 55 mistake.
