1970 Relco Catalogue

I have in my possesion a really nice copy of The 1970 Relco detector catalogue. I will share some memories from this 8 1/2 X 11" booklet. This should jog some of the old timers memories.....NGE

Cool. B.F.O. Detectors

This was my very first Detector.
I Got it for Christmas.
in the 60's I'm sure

I Don't remember the box on
the coil though.



Had to put it together myself.
however, I actuallyTook it to a Neighbor who
knew how to Solder Etc. & Had him put it together for me.
the signal came through ann AM Radio set to a particular channel.

I Could find my Dads Car with It



a Year later Relco accepted it as a trade in
at full price $19.95 off the Frontiersmen.



With that if I Threw a soda can on the ground
I Could find it.

They were the worst detectors ever.
At least for my Iron Ore Riddled Ground.

Wasn't till I Bought a Whites that I Was able
to find coins.

Like Jeff of PA, I too, upgraded to a White's detector in 1970. I bought it from Sears Roebuck for 129.95. metal or mineral, 4db coil, no meter, 14 AA's, and the most uncomfortable handle in the world, wrist would be so sore after an hour of hunting. I sold it to a friend for 75 bucks in '73 and bought a Compass Yukon 94B ( I think ). It has a problem with depth, so my friend sent it into White's and they quoted him a repair tag of more than twice the value of the machine. My friend is still using that machine, and doing terrible with it. It will detect a silver quarter at about 3". It's a pleasure going hunting with him on upstate New York virgin properties, he says that I just get lucky ( I'll never remind him again ) what's going on. Because he is a well to do cheapskate, let him struggle ........NGE

I had one of these too! I bought the whole package with the fine tuner and small coil, too. I also couldn't assemble it (I was 10-12), so I asked my friend's dad, a neighbor and TV repairman (Otis Pike, Wayne's dad), to do it for me. It had a wire-mesh holder for the AM transistor radio it used, and the only way you were supposed to know if it was detecting something was the whistling noise it made would change pitch. It "kind of" worked, at best. The "coils" were like plastic bowls which covered actual coiled copper wire-- the bottom of the coil was covered with a round piece of fiberboard. It definitely wasn't waterproof. The "bowl" part was kind of a metallic blue color. I wish I still had it as a memento. It's cool to see the actual catalogue after all these years. I think I discovered & ordered it from a magazine ad.
