On a regular basis I will look through boxes of pennies trying to find those rare and elusive varieties. The other day I found the attached penny that stuck out. The reason why it stuck out originally is because it had a marking on there which supports ecology.

So I take out my loop, and happened to see that the word liberty is double died. It is also slightly doubled in the word God and in 1971. Attached is a picture of the coin as well as a close-up of the double die in Liberty.

Here is my question, for this year, are these common? It is my understanding that this variety has the strongest doubling of all the cent series.

Here's the other question which in my opinion is pretty obvious. However considering that it has been modified with an engraving I would assume that this detracts from the value. However based on what you can see what would the monetary be in your opinion?

Any thoughts or input would be appreciated.

Thanks

Awesome coin! It's pretty scarce - the alteration does decrease it's value, but that's still an awesome find! Congrats!

Listed in my Wexler Lincoln cent double die guide as 1-O-11 with a value of $35.00 in my 1984 guide. Of course that's without the stamp on it.

Great find! Thanks for sharing...

The correct term is "doubled" die. Great find none the less!

post mint damage! not sure what effect that stamp has on a collectible like that but for sure it is negative. raw deal, sorry mate!

someone on ebay would buy it - post of half of the price of a comparable non damaged cent is my advice. someone wants that coin.

What is ironic is that if it weren't for the counter punch, I would not have looked at it with a loop. I was not aware of the 1971 DDO. This appears to be Obverse #1.

Here is a question. Is there a way to tell what the total population is of this doubled die? From what I can gather, it is quite rare. Has anyone else found one?

Thanks
