1973 Scholarly man painting

This is today's score! A scholarly elder, his deep piercing eyes, and his book! Quite a lovely piece, oil on canvas, large 31" long by 41" high. The signature is a mystery. I am only able to decipher the 73, but nothing else! If anyone recognizes the signature, I would be very appreciative if you would please let me know. Thank you!

Middle initial looks like an 'E.' That's all I can decipher! Great find. Love the painting and subject matter.
