I started CRH in December of 2007 and I have learned a lot from the various posts on this forum. I now know what dates to look for (besides the silver, of course!) but I was curious if anyone has ever found a 1974D double die in the thousands of coins that have been searched? It would be interesting to hear how many people have found one or more of these. Any success?

I found 3 last year and I think someone had found 100 or more over the years. They are out there, apparently in higher numbers in some areas.

I've found 9 in the last 2 years. I haven't had one show up in quite some time though.

I think I've found three so far. My 2008 redbook lists a pretty low price of $1.50 in MS65. I don't think I'll look to hard for them anymore.

Umm... Soldierman, that would be $150.00 in MS65! I would keep looking for them! My last issue of "coin values" also lists a MS60 at $75.00. Ifyndit, I found 4 74ddo's last year, and found my latest one last week. If you are already going through many thousands of halfs, it does'nt hurt to take a 10x loupe and check for the common errors. I have faith that you will find one! Good luck and HH, Gpurs....

With some persistance you will sure find one. I've found three in the last couple of years.

I found three last year- I quit seperating my coins anymore though- should go back to it! :D

I live near Dallas/Fort Worth, so the predominant coins here are the Denver mints. I have actively been searching for the 74D double die for many years now, and have found about 160 of them. The $1.50 in the 2008 Redbook would look to be a misprint. I just looked out on the PCGS website, and they are stating an MS60 is $35 and a MS65 is $240. Personally, I continue to look for them.

Thanks for all of the responses! I knew the 1974d double dies were out there. I've been checking all of mine and know it is just a matter of time before I start finding them.

If you believe that a 74ddo is only worth $1.50 in MS65, then yes I suggest you quit looking for them. Gpurs...

I thought it was awfully low. But why would the book say 1.50. So does that mean we don't believe any of the other prices?

Thanks
Cat

They do make misprints from time to time, a fact that is generally pointed out in the next edition.

The 74 DDO has come down in price though. In 1983 it was listed for 150 bucks. There have been quite a few found, so its more common than previously thought.

But to be as common as a standard issue coin (Pricewise)? I don't think so.

35 bucks sounds about right for a low MS example. On up for nice ones- :)

The big question is:

Has anyone here ever sold one for more than $.50?

I haven't seen any on ebay where anyone has bid on one.
They must be fairly common - I found more than a roll of them and don't waste my eyes on them anymore.

Since I have so many I have thought about listing a roll of them on ebay just to see what they would do. Just so I do not lose money I will set a starting price of face value, then with the buyer having to pay postage all I will be out is the ebay charge if it does not sell or does not go for more than face value. Cheap price to find out.

Here is a link to my ebay listing for one in November. It is an AU, and I found it CRH along with 4 others since September

I traded one off for a nice 1964 D/D, listed one that never sold (I had a low end of 20.00), and have kept the rest. I haven't thought of selling the others, but I'll give it a shot in the next couple of days at the local coin shops. :)
