It was in my mother's Loose Change. She pulled it out of her purse to pay, and I just happened to grab the quarter to put it into the machine. Then, I was like, "This isn't a quarter!"
Over the years, especially when they first came out; people mistakened those for quarters quite a bit. I think people have always been disappointed that the big dollars were discontinued.
always kind of a neat coin to find in change or dig, but the SBA dollar coins were a failed design that the public hated because they so closely resembled a quarter. The US mints currently have over 520 million of them in storage because nobody wants them and they don't know what to do with them.
Sometimes referred as an Edsel coin. I remember when the US Post offices were giving back your change in those in order for the mint to lighten the load on them. Even the stamp machine's returned change in Susan B's. Not sure why they stopped, but maybe logistically they just cost more to ship to every post office in the nation than paper money because of the weight.? I think it's cool you find it interesting. Could be a sign of a come back
