I always ask gas station attendant's if they have any half dollars and everyonce in a while I get lucky. I have found many this way. Today I got this 1987S Half-Dollar and I went to put it into my Whitman book and there is not a spot for it. Does anybody know why? The coin is in great condition.

I also got a Canadian penny that has a dove on the back with the dates being 1867-1967.

adding to previous: "with the exception of the Susan B. Anthony dollar from 1979-81 and a portion of the mintage of cents in the early 1980s".
Apparently someone didn't know what they were doing by putting a proof into circulation.

Nice find. Proofs are rarely found in circulation.

The sad part is that the 1987 Proof Sets that were originally sold for $11 are now going on EBay for as little as 99¢. You may be better off taking the coins out the holder and spending them. :'(

If you do plan to spend that 87S half, email me first -- I'll give you a couple dollars for it.
That missing spot in your album means the 1987 series was not intended for circulation. I found a 1976S proof once.

And, regarding the Canadian cent, it is in commemoration of the Centennial of Canadian Confederation. The one-year Rock Dove design is by Alex Colville. 345+ million mintage, so not scarce, but a necessary coin for a Canadian type set.
