Took a buddy out with me to a site I've only been to once before. He's never found anything old and I've made it my mission to put him onto something old and interesting. The day started with me finding a little teeny weeny silver coin. Turned out to be an 1851 French 20 cent piece. This thing is so damn small. I put it next to a Seated Dime to show just how small it was. My next find was an enormous axe head. I love the shape and would love to know a date range. Well that about did it for this guy today besides a spoon or fork handle and some round balls.
Best part of the day was my bud calling me over and holding up an old dirty copper. I was so damn happy for him. He's such a nice guy and hasn't had much luck. Then he pulls out a beautiful old brass toy cannon. Very very nice piece. Then he pulls out a beautiful and very ornate garter buckle! Ok killer slow down and leave some for your boy here :-) Totally kidding I could not have been more happy. It was a very satisfying day out.

Hey Shawn I dug the silver 20 cent still waiting to hear what his old copper turns out to be. Hoping for his sake it's 1700s. He's never dug an 1800s yet so I guess that would be great too :-)

Great silver! I have seen that type axe somewhere before. Maybe someone here posted one. I hope so because they will ID it for you.

Looks a lot like a colonial felling axe. TNGUNS just helped me out with a pic. But there's several styles that are very similar. Whatever it is it took a BIG man to swing it

Even little men were big back then, lol.

Nice hunt today ahab. ..Nice thing to do for ur friend. ..I find more joy out of see my friends find old stuff then me...Especially if they never found anything old before. ..Thats why I like to take Brad out with me...LOL...

I think I was more excited than him. I told him he'd hunt for hours but his finds would come in a very concentrated area and prob all within an hour. That's how it worked today. He's the kind of guy that spends as much time picking every bit of trash out of the forest as he does detecting so it couldn't happen to a better representative for our hobby. You must feel GREAT taking Brad :-)

Nice job on the silver. The axe head is awesome. Lets see a pic after its been cleaned up.

You had me going with "20 cent silver " the extreme rarity of the U.S. twenty cent pieces caught my attention - Nice Finds .

Yes and this coin had me going :-) I saw 20 cent on it and let my mind wander for a bit. You don't often say you're disappointed with an 1851 silver but I admittedly was.

So my buddy just sent me a pic of his first old coin and it's a freaking Mass copper like I dug last weekend! What are the chances of his first old coin ever being a Mass Copper. That is awesome! I didn't need 2 anyway lol
