I have about six of them after six boxes. They're out there. Is it true that all 2009 US coins are somewhat rare? Or is it just nickels and dimes?

All of them are really low mintages. When the economy collapsed every one cashed in all there change. And there was a huge surplus of coin. So they stopped minting like 1/3 of the way through the year

RELATIVELY low. Here are the numbers...
Nicks: 2009P: 79.M. 2009D: 39.8M
Dimes: 2009P: 96.5M 2009D: 49.5M
Yes, compared to making hundreds of millions or even 1 billion+ coins that are usually minted they are scarce. But not rare. A lot have been saved. If it were 2.6M like the 50d it would be a big deal.

Is it true that most of the 2009 Jefferson nickel was shipped to Puerto Rico? I've searched so many rolls and not a one

Yes, all of them were, but later, some were transported here. Most come from travel to Puerto Rico.

I knew mintages were low that year, but never heard why before.
