Found a total of 83.45oz of silver in 2023. This compares with 31.77oz in 2022, 71.11oz in 2021 and 75.90oz in 2020.
The major difference between 2022 and 2003 was that I found 16 rolls of solid or nearly solid silver dimes. Found 3 additional rolls with 10+ silver dimes in them (call those a half-solid roll). In 2022, I did not find any solid (or near solid) rolls.
If you take out the solid or half-solid rolls of dimes (about 850 coins = 61.5oz), the 2023 total would be about 22oz of silver, so actually less than in 2022. Halves in 2023 were very few and far between for me. CRH is more about luck than anything else in my view.
These are the details and the statistics:
Nickels: Searched $6,402 (128,040 coins). Between the War nickels and buffaloes, averaged 1 per every $67.39 searched.
- 59 war nickels. One CWR had 9 of them, and another has 3 of them
- 36 buffaloes or earlier (12 were dateless buffs). Found 3 V nickels (1900, 1907, 1908)
- 2x 1939D and 1 1939S
- 119 Canadian nickels
Dimes: Searched $26,375 (263,750 coins). Averaged 1 silver for every $25.41 searched. If you take out the solid and half-solid rolls, the average was 1 per $138.37 searched. Even that is a good result for dimes, given my past experience.
- 1,007 FDR (including 15 from Coinstar machines). Found 14 solid rolls in June, 1 in October, and 1 and call it two half-solid rolls in December, and one half-solid roll in October (all of these have prior individual posts on T-net)
- 27 mercs (incl. 2 from Coinstar),
- 3 Canadian 80% silver, and 1 Canadian 50% silver.
- 15 clad impaired proof
- 94 Canadian dimes
- 62 British 5p pieces
Quarters: Searched $760 and found 2 silvers. 1 in a MWR and 1 in a CWR.
Halves: Searched $324.50 (649 coins). Averaged 1 silver per $13.52 searched. I don't search boxes.
- 1 90% 1964 JFK
- 23 40% JFK
Breaking it down further:
CWR: searched $130: found 2 40% (1 silver per $65.00)
MWR: searched $0
Loose from tellers: searched $194.50 and found 1 90% JFK and 21 40%. The highlight was finding the 1970S in November (1 silver per $8.84 searched).
- in one trip to a bank, when the teller sold me the loose halves, she also sold me the $1 1987 ASE (there is a prior post on this one).
Coinstar: in addition to the silver mentioned above, Coinstar coughed up:
- $12.31 in US clad
- $1.47 Canadian
- 4.19 Euros
- other various foreign coins
Thanks for looking, HH, and good luck to all in 2024
