Yup I know my last hunt , until Fall , was about "I got Balls" ending in done now till the Fall. Well I think most of us here that pick up the "Magic Wand" have the bug, long as not ticks, and when opportunity knocks we answer. This is a great and wonderful hobby and if it does not interfere with work or your significant other then "Just Do It" So my gal is having a girls day out with the ladies down the Maine coast yesterday so what am I to do? Answer fire up the Deus, pack a lunch, do an inventory and try not to leave the detector at home after a 35 mile trip.
I think u that have been following my posts know me as Castineman and where I hunt . In 23 years of hunting this site one would think everything on my "Bucket List" would be found, if lost , by now. Nope two buttons from the two Brit regiments that fought there have eluded my coils on the old XLT, DFX and now Deus. The two REgts were of the 74Th REgt of Foot Argyles and the 82nd Hamilitons. There were 650 of the 74th and only 150 of the 82nd. The 74th I have found in abundance as have a few relic hunters except for an officer's type and no luck on the 82nd .However in the words of "Mel Fisher" Today's the Day" proved to be true when a poor example of an 82nd coat button came under my coil as my first target yesterday.
Yes one would think why not go back to where the guinea was found. Am pretty sure a single coin loss but pulled out al of those pull tabs found there and in my Thing bag and in the file 13, (Garbage can). So I did however plan a hunt for ordnance so on my way out to the bluffs turned on my DEus where in April of 2018 I first good find after a 5 hour hunt and pretty good selection of Post REv WAr shotgun shells (LOL) I dug just off the path a Broad Arrow 1 pound cannon ball. That made my day and about to call it a day when my Deus gave me a deep iron signal . I decided to come back next day to did out not thinking anything great would be found. Next day made it my first dig and to my surprize up came a rare American Hex bar shot frag missing about 4 inches of the other end. Who that was a surprize .
So yesterday I decide to re hunt that are in hopes of maybe finding the other half. Nope suspect it is on private property . Now why I mention this relic is I saw the remains of there old hole depression and swung my coil on it anyway. next to it a foot away I get a small reading. Up comes a pewter coat size button in bad condition but no less a REv WAr one of either a 74th or 82nd.
Got it home and lightly cleaned to see a light number 8 and end if a "2" . Yup a "Bucket Lister" THey were in Castine only two months and left to go back to Nova Scotia . So rare to find any and the first of my knowledge being found. NOt pretty but pretty rare. I think since this button was found only a foot from the hex bar shot my excitement got to me and forgot to check that ground. My bad and a good lesson. Now off to find that elusive 74th officers button. Wish me luck. THanks for reading. Gary
