Sorry for the let down :'( Finally got my $25 face I ordered from Gainesville on Sep 23rd for 23.5X face (after the big dip, I was convinced Ag would shoot back up, but as we all know, it has stalled around $31/oz) The bag looks to be Roosevelts and Mercury's. I'm sure it will be common dates.

My wife calls me at work today to let me know something has (last night) killed 7 of my 12 young chickens I bought a few weeks ago. My Blue Heeler, Cujo, was the prime suspect, but I was trying to figure out how he got in the dog pen the chicks were in. So when I get home around 7 tonight and walk towards the pen, I see a skunk munching on the leftover baby chicken body parts. Needless to say, a skunk cannot dodge 12 gauge #6 shot from 10ft away.

HH and hope the skunks stay away (literally).

Hahaha. I don't know many things that CAN dodge a 12 guage from 10 feet.

Happy Hunting...Literally. :hello2:

I heard a skunk will usually spray if you shoot it anywhere besides the head.... Is that true? ( Im assuming no, or you would've mentioned that). Just curious though, in case it ever matters.

Most of the damage was in the neck/chest area, but a couple hours later, when I went to dispose of the body, my clothes got infused with the nasty smell.
Funny thing is, after the shot, my 15 yr old step daughter walks to the end of the porch and I said "Cujo has been acquitted." Silence, ??? She finally says, "Oh, I thought you shot Cujo, I was about to start crying." So I had to explain what acquitted meant.

set some coon traps with a can of oil packed tuna fish with some punctures in the lid from an old fashioned can opener, they don't spray when they starve to death :-)

thats how we used to get rid of them in our pheasant tree belts in South Dakota, they would eat the pheasant eggs so we would set those traps all over the belts we planted for game.

Skunks love to get in chicken houses. I can't tell you how many I've shot inside them, Once we were setting up the houses for chickens, I move a large culvert pipe that we use for keeping the chickens in one part of the house until they get big enough to move around. When I picked it up I heard something hissing at me and immediately dropped the pipe and ran for the gun. When I got back in the house the guy I had working with me was leveling drinker lines and heard my gunshot. I looked down the house and saw him hurdle 2 drinker lines and a feedline(These are about 7 feet apart in total) With his hand and shirt over his mouth. I just died laughing. Of all the horrible smells in a chicken house, the smell of a skunk overpowered them all.... :laughing7:

You'll probably never know for sure what killed the chicks.
I raise birds myself, and have trouble keeping neighbor dogs of my property, because some let their dogs run at times.
I have the most trouble with the wild mink. I've trapped/shot 3 so far inside the coop and rabbit hutch. One time something got into the coop and massacred a half-dozen birds. I set a Connibear in a 5-gal bucket and over a weeks time caught a raccoon, skunk, opossum, and a huge tomcat, so I don't know for sure what got to the birds.

Skunks are one of the dumbest animals walking, which is why so many get run over by cars.

They are one of the easiest animals to trap, and you may find that there are more than one.

I like to shoot one caught in a trap, then go away for at least one day.

The next day, I come back and bury it trap and all.

Lately, I have found a few better places to trap, such as Chase and Wells Fargo.

Keep on Rollin' !

In Florida, it is the coons. I moved here from WA where the Raccoon's were realitvely small, down here they are as big as Beagles and will fight when cornered. They are constantly being hit by cars and what not. Bobcats love to munch on them
as well. The rabbits down here are down right stupid. My dog will get within five feet of them (on a leash) and the stupid rabbit
does not even move. You can always tell when we have a bobcat in our neighborhood, all the small game disappears......

Sorry to hear about your chickens. Don't have any experience with any domestic animals, so I can't offer any advice on protecting them. I'd be careful of any wildlife though. Lots of animals carry rabies.

As long as you keep the skunks down your way, I'll be happy. :laughing9: :laughing9:

May the chickens RIP.

I've had plenty of skunks around lately. I wish you could shoot those for me too! :tongue3:
