3-6 overhang sifting

So I finally made it out to do a little sifting today. Found what I think is a broke pine tree point, some chips / flakes of worked chert, an old tip that’s really worked over and tiny. Then I found this weird discodial type rock. It’s definitely some type of stone. It has a hole cracked in the middle of one side. Really have no idea, would love some input on it specifically. Never found anything quite like it. Thanks for looking

Couple more pics of the broke point...neat material, speckled chert with dark brownish clear chert minus speckles..swirled together Maybe it was heat treated on the parts that aren’t speckled? Thanks for the look

Few more of the disc stone. Looks like possible usage wear on outside edges around it...hope I’m not overdoing it with all the pics. Thanks any info on disc stone appreciated.

The disc stone is cool, sucks about the heartbreaker pine tree. I know how you feel; I found a broke Boggy Branch Type One today. I'm about to post a picture of it.

If I found that round thing around here I'd say it was a small nodule of flint. Not sure what's going on with the hole. Gary

From the shape and with those cracks/fissures around the hole, it looks more like fired sand tempered clay/pottery to me. May appear completely different in hand, but I don't see cracks like that forming in a rock like that. Almost look like they formed as the clay shrunk as it dried out? JMHO.

I think it is an nodule also. Looks like it would fit perfect into one of the nodule holes left in top of overhang walls. Maybe they pierced it somehow and it didn’t contain chert? Heck I don’t know. I will day I don’t think it’s fired clay, it is stone, I am pretty certain. This makes me want to finish opening it up to see. On the other hand ,it’s pretty cool rock like it is.......hmmm. Thanks for input guys, I appreciate your help as always!!

It’s surely an oddity. It has some of the traits I’ve seen on Tektite formations. Except, the cracked-out implosion looking fracture.

The round thing is natural.We see them in caves and over hangs. They are neat and think that ancient man thought so as well.How deep are you going? Sometimes it stops and then picks back up with earlier habitation. Also be sure to check the waste piles they made outside the shelter.

Thanks for responses, everyone actually. As far as how deep, we are planning to try and reach a bottom of the cave/overhang area. Gotten down 4 to 5 ft in couple spots by drip line. Keep thinking we’re there, or will hit couple feet void of anything we can identify as an artifact, then bang, a polished hammer stone 4 ft down. Also the level where I’ve found the blue and purple broken bases, I’ve posted pics of in the past few months. Haven’t been able to identify the “waste areas” you mention...this overhang is literally a roll you down type steep hill just beyond the drip line, 40 ft down to cliff then creek. I’m guessing the waste area, will be a spot along drip line of overhang they’d use. I’m guessing I’ll know similar to fire pits when I hit one, by a possible smell or “dirt color” different from the rest. Please feel free anyone to expand upon “waste area” ID of rock shelter overhangs. Thanks, hope some find my reply

When they drop pf sharply like that I have most times found the waste area to the sides and thinking about it is seems it is always to the right side facing the over hang. Never thought about it until now. The steep hill going down I never find much but sometimes in the creeks will find a lot if it does not flash flood. You can use a probe to help see if it has a waste pile. It should be a tad softer and the clink of flint it sharper then the clunk of mountain stone. The metal probe will feel like its cutting and scrapping something. You are having a fun time. Shelters like yours are hard to find now days. Most have been dug.

Might be natural but doesn't mean it wasn't used like a game ball. Not all tools had to be built...only gathered. That thing would be a small game killing machine.
