Had less than 2 hours to hunt tonight after work. Found lots of trash as usual and Clad, Copper and Zink. But I found a really roasted nickel size coin that was crusted and green. I think it is a roasted Buffalo Nickle. Oh and an old kids Wagon Wheel.

Looks like fertilizer got to those I have a jewelers loop that helps identify some of my coins before I clean them in case they could be a key date. My coins here in Michigan look like those. MY wife and kids got me a rock tumbler I tumbled 1000 coins or more wow they came out nice if I ever return them to the bank I save them all right now!!!! Thanks for sharing good job!!!!!! The tumbler I use only for clad coins!!!!!!

I have a Loop too but I just cant pull anything out with all the green on it. I also have a vibratory tumbler for reloading but like you I wont use it unless it is clad. I brushed it softly with a soft tooth brush and water only. I don't know what to clean it off with so I will just leave it for now.

Our 5 cent coins usually don't do well in the ground. It could be a 2 center too? Retirement is good. Glad you could get out there in N.C..
Good Luck!

Everyone has there way to clean coins!! if you type coin cleaning in the search menu there are lots of posts Hope it turns out to be a key date always exciting!!!!!!

Sometimes a toothpick on a dry coin will reveal something.........another good hunt for you............

Congrats on your finds and taking out the trash. How are you coming along using the Ace 400?

I really like the 400 so far. The iron volume works great but sometimes I still have trouble picking out a coin from a bottle cap or tab. I dig em unless I get real heavy grunts on either side. When I found my silver it had a grunt on the left and a sharp ding over the dime. It turned out to be a washer right beside the dime. But I am learning and so far it has been a coin producer.

UPDATE:
I cleaned the coin as best I could using peroxide and amonia cleaner. Let it boil in peroxide for an hour. Most of crud came off. I can not make out the head side too well but I can see a Buffalo on the other side. So it is a very roached Buffalo Nickel. Thanks for all your comments and help. Happy hunting!

UPDATE to the UPDATE! With a little more cleaning in the date area I can barely see an "18". So knowing that it was made in the early 1900's I have to assume it is a 1918 Nickle. OK, I'm done! Solved!
