$370 in books bought for a buck...plus some MD'ing

Hey Tnet,

I went to port austin, MI for some garage sailing and some detecting. The first garage sale was boring, but the next one was a lot more interested. It appeared that someone inhereted a book collection and was selling hard covers for 25 cents and soft covers for 10. (he let me have them for a buck...what a nice guy) I saw a neat book called american biographies which chronicled some patriots and was printed in 1840! I have been unable to find many similar ones (it was part of a series), but the ones I did find were priced at $100! Then, I bought some training manuals from WWII, none of which were selling below $30 each! I should have bought them all...but its over now.

I also went MD'ing by an old hotel in the water. Highlights were 4 wheats, oldest 1918, and an anchor... any guesses to age?

Love the old books! I do my old book "hunting" at Goodwill and the Salvation Army stores here. I've found 27 books pertaining to the Civil War to add to my collection. The "centerpiece" of my CW books is the entire series of "The Army of the Potomac" by Bruce Catton. Hardcovers cost me a buck a piece. Have seen them selling as high as $45 each on e-bay. I think most folks just don't know what they have when it comes to books. That's fine by me! :icon_pirat:

Nice post GC! You could easily sell the anchor or keep it as your biggest find ever, LOL. HH, Mike

Great day, GC!

I like yardsales better than thrift stores, myself.
There are pros that hit them both, but some yardsalers are real motivated to get rid of 'stuff'.

I'll have to check that one out. I'm halfway into the first book (Mr.Lincoln's Army). Lots of information to look into so far...

A close friend of mine son went to an estate sale. They had a metal box [heavy] with a heavy lock on it,$5.00. When he got it home he broke the lock off. He let me see the contents. All kinds of gold and silver coins. I mean the box was full. Lots of old rings and jewelry. A coin dealer friend gave him an estmate of about $15,000,just for the coins. There was one morgan dollar in a bezel 1898, and on the top it said, the year I was born. Can you imagen collecting all that stuff and after you die some dope sells it for $5.00? :tard: :tard: Mike.

Pretty interesting when someones collectibles go for so little...

My X was once amazed when some of my 'junk' out of the yard brought her $600 at a yard sale.

She wasn't THAT impressed... she's an X...

Still, I must say she was a very nice girl.
