Might order a box of halves soon. Haven't done that from my regular Wells Fargo in a few months. Will still hit the casinos for halves tomorrow though. Let's hope I get an April shower of silver.

Ohhh Weeee, that's a lot of nickels alright! Wow, 300 war nickels,that has got to be some kind of record! OK, I have another question,how many years have you been searching and saving them? I applaud you!!!!

I started saving nickels (and coins in general) when I was a young teen, plus my Dad had a collection so that spurred me on. Bicentennial quarters got me interested initially and then I began asking my Mom if I could check her change on just about a daily basis. I used to save S-nickels too (68-70) at first but when I moved to Vegas in 1985 I found they were really plentiful and stopped.

Nickel slots were just a goldmine, or more accurately a silver mine. I found my first war nickel ever in a slot machine and that hooked me. Then I started finding buffalos too and I never looked back.

I probably completed my first set of nickels in the late 80s and it remains the only series I've ever completed solely from circulation. But my volume of pre-60s didn't increase dramatically until 1997. I got the idea of trying to complete a roll of each year and mintmark. Ten years later and it has now added more than 1,800 nickels to my collection.

I forgot about the slot machines, I bet that did help out a great deal. I'm glad you took full advantage of them before they pulled the majority of coin operatered machines out. I still like them,and hearing the jingle of coins hitting the tray. Of course your hands get dirty,but that's fun too when your winning or searching and finding keepers!

You are truly a dedicated coin hunter,it's great hearing about people that started collecting coins as a child.

You've got me on war nickels as I only have 125. But I do have approx. 4500 pre-1960 Jefferson nickels (not including what I have given my son which probably adds another couple hundred including a set of war nickels), 56 Buffalo nickels and 5 v-nickels.

As of the end of March 2005, I only had 427 pre-1960 Jeffersons, 7 war nickels, 1 V-nickel, and 3 buffalos. Almost all have come from circulation (many from the local Indian casino which now is almost entirely coinless).

Although I don't release any back into the wild like you do so they add up pretty fast at about 25 per $100 searched.

I used to save S-nickels too (68-70) at first but when I moved to Vegas in 1985 I found they were really plentiful and stopped.

Funny you should mention the post-1960 San Fran minted nickels. I still save 1968-S and 1969-S but I gave up on the 1970-S as being too plentiful. Someday I may decide to release them, but if I do I will do like a whole bag full at once and keep the ones in the best shape.


Though I have 2 shield nickels from my uncle, I am still waiting to find my first shield nickel. I know one turned up at a bank a couple years ago, but the teller wouldn't sell it to me. :P

Wouldn't it be great to find a Shield? Then you'd have an example of each nickel design. Not many people can say they've found one of each in circulation.
