Went out with a buddy for some quick swinging after work on a hill. Came up with 4 different headstamps and all were ones I haven't found yet! These are as fun as coins to me cause I like looking into them. Nice to add 4 more to my new collection doubling my variety haha. Warm hydrogen peroxide followed by extra fine steel wool cleans them up nicely. 20180508_202811.webp20180508_231128.webp20180508_230808.webp

Very nice! I don't know why, but I also love finding old shotgun shells, and I've kept a collection of them, too. Nice job on cleaning them up - I'll have to try your method.

If you want to try it Tom, I just microwave the hydrogen peroxide for like 20 to 30 secs in a shot glass to heat it up then dunk the shell in. It really fizzes a ton and takes off the dirt. Worked good on my military button too. Just keep an eye on it sometimes you dont want it in too long ripping off patina etc.

Thanks! I've got a few that need more than just a soft brush and water. I'll try your method!

man, I throw these away....I keep seeing that people collect them. Maybe I should keep them. I probably have 50 or so in my trash currently if anyone wants them.

Thanks for the tip on cleaning head stamps. I have about 40 old head stamps that are from 1880 to around 1920, enjoy find them as much as old coins, I will try you method of cleaning.

Nice finds and preservation! :occasion14:

I toss them as quick as I get them. Never tried to save any unless I get the ones with the little (mercury fulminate?) tube off the side. I once got a pile of them and kept handing them to my buddy to keep together. At the end of the hunt I asked to have them back. He had just thrown them back down on the ground and was wondering why I kept handing them to him. It was his first and last hunt lol.
