Your first item is a wick holder for an oil lamp, the slots are ware the star gear engages the wick to push it up. HH

Wow, I would have never guessed that! I have found them before and just scrapped them, so I decided to find out what it was. I knew it wasn't anything too special, but it amuses me just the same! Thanks!
