hi all, Even nearly 12 months after the big bush fire here. Much cleaning up is still to be done. On Australia day i hit a place called Long Gully. All the burn trees and top soil was cleaned up. Which has revealed areas of clean ground. Covered up by tailing heaps and vast numbers of peppercorn trees and lots of local dumped rubbish, this site would have been near impossible to Md. Using machinery the whole area was scrapped down to the pan. between 1856 and 1953 more than 200 mines operated. Considered one of the most mined areas in the world. Also called the "Golden Mile" Someware around 7 million ozs was take from this area in a 100 years. Deepest mine was the Victoria Quartz with main shaft at 5004 feet, the richest mine here was the Lansell 180.

Spent most of the time working the natural ground revealed and this was a real pain, Plenty of junk. started the day with DD coil and cleared as much as possible. Most wasted time. So moved to the area past the mines and worked the area on the side of the hill which had little and no structures.Covers by tailing sands for years the site had never be hunted. Put the 12 inch mono coil on switch my target volume up to 12 and Gain at 12 and threshold just up from minium. After 3 trips of about 4 hours in the morning and evening i managed about 11 grams of gold and 2 specis.

Here a pic of the site today after the clean up and one of the area when the hard mines operated in about 1880.

hi slak jak i not the only one working these areas. If you know where Diamond Hill is its crazy out there. Last weekend i spoted more that 4 dozen mders in the first part of the reserve. Holes every where. i got more than 5 keen people get to close to me. Gpxs need about 40 yards of clear space. Got a bit heated and decided to point my md straight at them and turned the gain to full. Would have blown there VLFS and earphones off their heads. lol. No manners. Ground got to many hot rocks for vlf so most were just wasting their time. Still plenty of small gold if your have a gpx. But i have gone home with nothing plenty of times too. When leaving one person was quick to jump the spot i tried.

tinpan back to quiet grounds for me

hey tinpan , know what you mean about the gps ,
would love to be able to use 1 but old arthur ritus
hurts the shoulders , even the lightest of detectors
get to be a strain , still must keep trying .
didnt know it was that bad with so many detectors
in the 1 area , must be anoying but what can one do .
look froward to your next post . slak jak .

Hi tinpan,

About those detecting cowboys with no manners. They come for a quick buck and go and you'll stay because you're a professional, mate. That's the difference.

That is awesome, Congrats on the gold.
Dman

Kudos for sticking with it Tinpan! Glad you were rewarded for your persistence! :icon_thumright:

Great finds. I hope you find a big goldnugget out there. :) :icon_thumleft:

gratz on the gold persistence is always the key factor of a great hunt wtg

Jackpot! 11 grams of some beautiful looking colour. That's a good days pay.
Your posts are inspiring me to check out the tailing piles around some old mines out here. I'm pretty confident that the two fishers I use would be sensitive enough to find a match head nugget.
I think you will do pretty good at that site of yours. Too bad about the rubbish. Is at least old garbage?
It will be one of those sites that you will be working on for years. Every time you go out, the more junk you will clear out. Lots of goodies waiting to be found.
Thanks for another great post!
Dave.

Great job working the site and figuring out which area would produce for you. Excellent post, fantastic haul of gold

Love the different colors of the gold. The darker color is because of what?
I can't imagine that many hunters in one open area. :icon_scratch:
Great hunt once again Tinpan :icon_thumright:
