HEY GUYS AND GALS

Made a post earlier on weather conditions affecting the detectors.

Here are the finds from that day .

The copper button comes apart by twisting it counter clockwise...and goes back together solidly by twisting clock wise. Seems kinda odd.

The pewter button is in good shape but I can,t tell if that is a number in the middle of it ????

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm sure someone else will chime in with a definite identification or correct name for it but that screw-apart button looks like a hidden compartment/smugglers button to me. Very cool find indeed and could be rare. No markings on it? What is the general age of the majority of the finds from this site?
happy hunting!

This site is 1600s to modern day.... but most finds are mid 1600s to 1850.

But yea it looks like it was meant to be used to hide stuff as the button looks like a normal small button when removed....pretty cool if that is what it was used for.

that's the center of a twoonie with the polar bear and queen on it.

LOLOLOLOL...you are correct !!!!

WTF... why didn,t I see that !!!

LOL...Can you just imagine what a detectorist will find of our current coins in 200 years...they will be completely disintegrated.!!!!

Have found toonies /quarters/dimes/nickels in the saltwater that are unrecognizable ..all have holes threw them...nasty.

too true! ive got a few coins from the 1700's that are in better shape and have more detail than some of the pennies that ive found with the newest queen on them. something wrong when only a few years of dirt in a park deteriorate todays coins faster than hundreds of years of (as in my case) farming and the chemicals and fertilizers that come with.
now if you could find the outter ring to go with that center piece, thatd be neat

WOW.... awsome ID Iron Patch !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is too cool... I like it. Will go nicely along side the others !

I can see the 47 now after you ID it.... however very faint of course. At least the edges are in great shape.

What is the rarity of that button ?

Also..any ideas on the copper one ?.... looks like it is supposed to come apart and it goes back together tightly also.

Another great hunt from you, Aqua. Great ID's from the members here as well.

I would say it's probably extremely rare. Have you ever heard the phrase "Shot Heard around the World"? It refers to the first shot fired of the Revolutionary War at the battle of Lexington and Concord, and what's cool is the 47th Regiment was there. Only a short time later the unit was sent to Halifax which is most likely the reason it ended up on the river for you to find. It's too bad about the condition, but anyone who has a true appreciation for these buttons would be able to get passed that and recognize it for the history it has. So for the unofficial banner count I would call that another one, and if this was my website I'd tell you to make a new post with the history, and regardless of the condition I would put it up top. :headbang: The other looks like an early 2 piece button, just broken the same way a more modern one would come apart and that's why the back comes off.

WOW...I really appreciate the time you take to look into all this history for me. That is very very very cool. !!!!

Had no idea ,obviously, what I really had . Kinda dumb founded as I sit here thinking about this.

That is really substantial part of our history !!!
