6-4-06 pennies

What do you usually find per $100 in pennies and nickles? I read all you posts but have the attention span of a gnat... ;)

Let's see, averaged out it would probably be 20-25 pre-1960 nickels per $100 and 25-30 wheats and 10-15 Canadians per $100 in pennies.

Hi All,
foundinrolls here :-) Let me suggest , if you don't already, looking for Double Dies on halves. There are numerous examples to be found on halves, especially from the 1970 era. I have nice ones on 1971 dated pieces, 1973 and 1974 dated ones as well from P and D mints. Look at the IN GOD WE TRUST motto for doubling. You will see nice doubled serifs on the W of WE and the U an TRUST, those are the letters I find easiest to see the doubling on.

If you find 90% or 40% silver stuff, the theory is the same. There are many good DDOs and DDRs on these as well.

Have Fun,
Bill

Foundinroll's suggestion got me thinking... I have almost $100 in halves that had not been examined for DDOs or DDRs, so I decided to look at them this evening.
So far, this is what I have found - it appears I have a half with the word "IN" missing from the "IN GOD WE TRUST" motto on the front of the coin.
I have attached some pics, what do you guys think? It almost appears to me as if there is a ghost image of the "n" from the word "IN", but I'm not sure. Is this something that someone else has seen before?
Does this type of thing happen, or could this be abnormal wear on the coin from handling??

Any comments would be welcome.
Thanks and HH,
Bob

Hi,
It's a neat filled die error in that the word IN was completely left off the coin during the strike. What happens is that grease fills in the word on the die and when the coin is struck the metal does not fill the recesses of the die because the grease is in it. You would think that the grease would squeeze out and the lettyers would show up but it doesn't work that way.

The Grease from the machinery can get into any part of the die resulting in missing details including individual letters or numerals in the date.

They are relatively common as errors go but one like this that has a word completely missing is a more desirable form of this error.

have Fun,
Bill
