6 hours of freshly plowed field hunting last weekend

I hit 3 of my favorite fields on sat., and 1 new one on sun. I wasn't the first though unfortunately, footprints and the dreaded small piles of chips were evident in every field. Still came out with a good haul. I found 3 hammerstones, some points and scrapers, and a bunch of flake tools/ and knives. Also found a tool I cant yet ID, I think it could be a pick but I'm not real sure, any ideas on this piece would be appreciated, thanks for looking.

You did better than me on the plowed field.We followed footsteps all day long Saturday. Nice knifes and scrappers. Looks like our flint. I wonder if some people do not know what hammer stones are? I think they in themselves are great tool finds.
On your large item at first I thought celt or axe. It does not seem to be pecked or worn so is it polished? Hard to tell in the pictures. You think maybe a tool for planting and digging?
Nice finds and thanks for sharing them. I am glad to see it still coming out of the ground.

That's a nice haul thirty7. As for the tool in question my guess is it's not a tool in it's present form, but was instead going to be one. I'd say it was the start of a Celt and they had just begun pecking on it to shape it.

thanks for the comments Tn, the large tool has use wear on the bit, and slight polish on the sides and the top has been squared off by either repetitive hammering or grinding. It's kinda hard to tell in the pic. The bit is unlike a celt or axe it's pretty unrefined and dull, but definitively has some use wear. It could possibly be an unfinished form, lost or discarded?

Have to agree with you Solll, I think it is a discarded or unfinished celt, maybe the sandstone material was giving the maker some problems and it was discarded.

What a great day you had! You know.... I must be getting a little better at this because... when I saw your pictures, I thought..... that looks like Virginia material. Sure enough, I look at your info and see that you are in Virginia! Great post and thanks for sharing.

thanks for the comments Molly. Airborne , appreciate it, I know what you mean, I 've learned more here in 4 months then the whole 10 years I've been collecting, it's a really valuable resource.
