65-70 Kennedy Half dollars are NOT 40% silver....don't be fooled

I see all of the roll hunters getting excited about getting the so called 40% silver Kennedy half dollars in rolls. I see coin sellers on eBay selling the things for 3 bucks.....insane says I.

Am I missing something? These coins have a 100 percent copper core, and the outer couple mils is clad in a 40 percent silver alloy. They are not 40 percent silver by weight

If you want silver content.....pre-64 US coinage is all you should concern yourself with. If you're paying a premium for the silver clad halves....you might want to check and see if what I'm telling you isn't true.

1965-1970- Weight 11.50 grams / net weight .1479 oz. pure silver.

Guess I was wrong.....maybe...

I did the grams to ounces conversion......and it comes out to nearly 40 percent....but if we were talking troy ounces, which is usually the case when talking about silver....it's still not 40 percent by weight.

Whether they are or not...they hold no mystique for me.

I see what you mean.
It this rate it would take 7 40% halves to make a touch over an ounce.
If my math is right.
So if they sell at $3.00 each you are paying well over $21.00 per ounce for silver.

Just be on the lookout for the key 1970.
The 1970-D was only issued in mint sets.
The 1970-S was proof of course.
I consider myself fortunate to have one of each.

I've heard of some dealers paying $1.30+ for them. Earlier this year when silver was over $15/oz they brought over $2.00. If silver goes half as high as some of the predictions i've seen, then they'll be worth having. So if they have no mystique for you, throw them back into circulation and I'll take them when they show up in my rolls.

According to my Math, it would take approx. 6.8 1965-71 .50 to net 1 oz of Silver. That makes these Coins 12.8%, not 40%. Then @ $12 an oz.,Each Coin has approx $1.76 worth of Silver.

Must be the New Math! Or maybe just the old Gov't!

There was no need for me to be that specific.
And the coin dates are 1965-1970.
I still don't know where the term" 40% "has come from over the years.
I guess that would be one way to make collectors want them.
I will stick with the 1964's and older myself.

.......you mean that in the 3 years that I have been painstakingly pulling "40%" halves from rolls that I have been duped, that I should only concern myself with pre-65 coins!!......dang it!.....now what am I gonna do with 2000+ halves that I paid 50 cents apiece for........well, I guess I could just turn them all back in and get my $1,000 back..........yeah, that's what I think I'll do in the morning, get my $1,000 back......orrrrrrrrrrr.........maybeeeeeeeee, I'll bring them to the local coin shop and let him give me $3,000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Come on folks, tell me we are smarter than this............

In this part of the country...halves don't circulate at all. I don't have any and don't care to look for them either. I dug a 1967 once.....but I spent it. Got 50 cents for it too.

If you go to your bank (or any bank) they don't have any halves?......maybe they could order them for you. It's kinda a no-brainer to pluck $1.50 each in silver 40%'s out of rolls (over $3.00 for 90%'s) when all you are paying is 50 cents. It adds up quickly. I don't even do it all that regularly but still have over 2000+ 40%'s (500+ 90%'s) in just 3 years making my total investment $1,250 but could turn them in today for roughly $4,625. I would kill just to have 10% of my stocks perform that well over 3 years.

I knwo it's silly...but I'd rather be detecting. I'm sure that I could order boxes of halves...and maybe that's a good activity for the wintertime...might give it a go then. I'd still prefer to find a ready buyer for the 40% halves.....even if AI didn't get top buck fr them. I'd spend the money on 90 percent silver coins.

Yeah, stocks are no of any interest to me. I'm not smart enough or wealthy enough to play on that field.

They are close to 40 percent silver by weight. Probably dead on, from the term. The half doesn't weigh near an ounce, thats why there's confusion. Takes almost three to weigh an ounce. .1479 ounces silver per equals pretty close to .4 ounces, or 40 percent.

Actually the term is pretty near accurate. The weight of the coin is 11.5 grams. There is .1479 ounces of silver, which is 4.19 grams of silver. Divide this by the weight of the coin, and it comes out to 36.46 percent silver content.

2-3 times face value in the current silver market,it may not be worth the trouble to some people if not then dont bother looking for them and if you find one use it for change at the grocery,but dont cry to me when they are worth 5 or 6 times face and you discover that if you had been saving them you may have a nice little pile of them :}

Silver is silver!!!! They are still worth more than face value no matter what. In this day and age you better keep all the silver you can

I picked up a bunch of halves for roll searching and found 36 40% (along with 3 90%). The 40% I found would have definitely made the effort worth it!

Ya know, it does not matter what the exact percentage of silver in a 1964-1970 half is.
If it is off by a few hundreths of a percent or whatever, so what?
The so-called 40% silver halves are getting 3 times face value on ebay. If there is not that much silver in them, the public at large are ripping themselves off by paying such high prices, aren't they?

Troy ounces or not, can anyone legally triple their investment as easily and quickly?
