Re: 68 D half looks like an error - what do you think?

That looks like a "struck through" error, where a foreign substance gets caught between the die and the coin blank. In this case it looks like it might be a piece of cloth. Never seen a struck through on the entire surface area though. Nice! Get a coin shop's opinion. What do you think Wayne?

Struck throughs can be worth $30-$50 and up, and yours is nice because it's a large coin and it's silver.

Neat coin there Tim. Nice find. Congrats.

That really is unusual, I've never seen anything like that! Congratulations

The reverse is stamped in a diamond pattern inside the rim - maybe it was hit twice? once with a die and once without? - The rim is higher and sharp.

Looks like it was glued into something with that pattern on it (an album perhaps?)- and then pulled off and the glue remained. Does the diamond pattern look like it's on top of the coin? Does it scrape off with a thumbnail?

Hey Ag-

No,

The metal is stamped. That pattern you see is raised metal. It is more pronounced than the picture really shows.

Thanks guys - I'll try to get an opinion from coin dealer.

I am thinking post mint. If it was strike through then the pattern would be imbedded in the metal, not raised. I cannot think of anything that would cause something like this coming from the mint.

The actual pattern is in the metal - grooves - thereby creating a raised metal illusion. I guess I used the term as if it were a piece of wood as in when you rout a groove to raise a field.
It is stamped and within the rim as well as below the rim edgewise.
I'll try to get to a dealer today.
