This is not a today's find. I actually found this a while ago. Johnny blaze found the same button a while ago also. He was able to post pic of his at the time but I was not able to.
At this point I think am. For what ever reason I was not able to PM him. So here we are . So if you see this John let me know if you have any new news. As far as I've been able to find out, it's a "cadet " button from Mass. But I'm not positive of that. Any one else is welcome to chime in.
Sorry moderators for shuffling this in this way but I couldn't get it to load any other way.

By the way, it's back marked D. Evan's Mfg. Attleboro.

For those reluctant to click on hotlinks:

It took me forever to go back through my archives to find this, but here is the info on your button:

That is interesting. Cool button.

So... is that information retrieved by Worthpoint from an eBay seller above completely spurious? Just someone trying to bump up the price with an invented heritage?

1860 CONFEDERATE BUTTON/ 7 STARS FOR SECEDING STATES
Importance of the backmark to Confederate attribution and date:Evans bought R&W Robinson in 1848--but he kept using the Robinson backmark up until 1860. (see Tice page 20). The importance of 1860 is that is when seven states decided to secede from the Union. In 1861 after the first shots were fired, the number jumped to eleven states. Interestingly, because the D. Evans business was in Mass. they made buttons up to 1860 for the Alabama Volunteer Militia, but didn't provide the Confederacy any buttons after 1860. The Alabama Volunteer Militia was more or less absorbed into the southern army around 1861. SO, this is an early Confederate secessionist button likely worn as a political statement of support for secession just before the war broke out. It comes from a coat found in Georgia and I have two others which I am considering selling.Size: about 22 mmcondition: patinated, excellent.

I don't know, but I would like to see where they got their info from. There really doesn't seem to be much info on it, but I tend to put more faith in the 1943 publication of button collectors than I do in ebay seller write-ups.
