It's not something a Horse or Camel could run across easily, it looks.
Maybe was a defensive strategy, they knew the quick path thru, but the pursuers would be walking thru.
There just wasn't any rocks to build a wall?

The hole story brings to mind a Gold ore lead and a lot of holes.
Back in 2004 I was in Arizona I was going around and Dowsing all the mining claims, owned by Roadrunner, near the Vulture mtns.
One claim was holes dug everywhere, none deep, about 3 to 4 ft. , near me, and on the adjacent claim, holes everywhere.
At every hole was evidence of Quartz being extracted.
Very rich ore was reportedly found that I remember.
I only carried Dowsing rods, and signaled for any Gold targets right away.
Yes, one strong connection line, bummer, heading off my claim over to a hole, about 50 ft away, on the adjoining claim.
I went over and Dowsed the spot, and in all the holes visible, only this one Gold target was left, right on the edge of a hole.
Not my claim, so I had to leave it.
Does anyone remember that Roadrunner prospecting claim, with the holes?
I can't find it on Google Earth.
I remember which hole it was next to, if I saw a map to the road in.
Maybe that claim has expired, now we can get the Gold.
