Once again the first find of the day turned out to be the best. Dug a 71st New York Infantry Regiment button made by the Waterbury Button Co., it's likely from around the time of the First World War as there was some military activity in the area at that time. Button is one inch across.

Also found this slightly smaller Marine Corps button likely from the same time period:

Last find of the day was a George V British large cent from 1935:

Everything for the day. Alot of the wheaties are quite old, most from the 1910's and 20's, suprised there haven't been any Indians among them yet:

Look at this pocket spill of wheaties:

Here's a video of the 71st taken in 1902:

For fans of Gangs of New York, you'll enjoy this little tidbit of history: On July 4, 1857, the 71st regiment, along with the seventh New York, served as riot control personnel during the riots in the Sixth Ward between the Dead Rabbits and the Bowery Boys. During this action, Dead Rabbit leader Mickey Free was killed and the 71st captured an 8-lb howitzer from the rioters.

big time gratz! such a cool post and back story, thanks

North Americans often call their cents "pennies". You've found a real British penny!

Love the post and all your finds! What a nice hunt you had!!

Great finds - congrats !

Years ago our Daughter's history teacher told her class that "Gang's Of New York" was one of the most historically accurate movies ever made.

Its source material, Gangs of New York by Herbert Asbury is certainly an accurate representation of the history of NYC. I have read the book and seen the 2002 Martin Scorsese film adaptation. The film tries very hard to stay true to the source material but it makes several changes for the sake of time that actually makes it not as accurate of a representation as it could have been. If you read the book you will notice the changes, you will also notice some little background details in the book are actually very well represented in the movie. For example the book talks about the "hot corn girls" who would sell corn on the cob and shout "hot corn!". If you listen closely in the movie you can hear them shouting "hot corn!" in many background scenes of the 5 Points. I would definitely recommend reading the book and then watching the movie.
