I do a lot of old field hunting out here on the east end since it goes back pre colonial times i have no trouble getting down 8 to even 10 inches with my DFX with a custom program and finding KG I and KG II coppers lots of old silver coinage buttons etc. i was wondering if anyone here ever used a Sov.GT with a S-12 coil to hunt fields dry dirt i know its mainly used in wet sand and its a monster :headbang: the soil here is a 50 50 mix of dark dirt and beach sand since all the fields are mostly on the shore line .Any repose is helpful in a few weeks ill be getting that Sov.GT with S-12 coil and Black Widow head phones and i will be using it on the bay and ocean beaches to there is absolutely no black sand out here just pure white beach sand .Dd60 Thanks

My Sov GT only has the 10 inch DD coil and I have not trouble with depth. I too use the Black Widows as I think they are the best for me. The Black Sand everyone refers to is Heavy, dark, sandlike minerals found on beaches and in stream beds; usually magnetite and that is what the fuzzy iron stuff is that sticks to our magnets in our scoops.

My Sov.GT also has the 10DD besides the S-12 and iam ordering the 15WOT coil ill use that on beaches the 10DD and S-12 should get good depth in the fields out here i never had a problem with hot rocks or black sand on my DFX just once my gain was to high and i hit a pile of buried coal :help: nearly blew my head phones off !! :laughing7: ,you use your GT mainly in fresh water lakes right? but have you used it in fields or woods ? i just never hear anyone saying they have, In those 2 places i dont care about iron because i dig all iron i just dont want iron on the beaches . I use the Sov Gt in the woods too now that I am inland. When I traveled the coast I didn't have the Sov GT and mainly hunted the wet sand and water with the Excal. I have a DFX also and don't like it for the fields or woods and only play with it in the tot lots or parks as there is more trash there and I have gotten used to looking at the screen. (mostly lazy to dig now that knees aren't working well.) But when I do use the DFX I miss the Iron Mask feature. I carry Sov in a bag from my neck and have the S-1 inline probe for it, but don't use the meter anymore.
