Re: a beach find

I thought of a jewel for stained glass but noticed the identifying numbers on the edge of the lens. Lens to a lantern or boat. Red right return. Arty

Re: a beach find

It's a red cap to an indicator light. Commonly seen on control panels. They make them both plain and jeweled.

Thanks:) I should incorporate this into a nautical themed mosaic:)
... but am not yet marking it as solved.

There's a lot of marks/etchings/writing around the entire edge of the piece. I have a jewelers loupe and STILL can't make it out.

Re: a beach find

Indicator lights are usually small. Unless your talking about giant machinery. Were the dimensions correct. 2 1/2 - 3 inches?

Re: a beach find

Looks like a lantern jewel to me. They were used on Railroad cabooses and they hung they for navigation purposes.

I dug one whole one and several broke one's in a railroad dump.
Here's mine:

The picture of the control lenses supplied is not the same. If you look carefully its faceted on the outside and they are 22mm wide not even close to the 2 1/2 to 3 inches. The pictures are of a railroad lantern lens and a car lens. The railroad lantern lens is 3 1/2 inches.

Hmmm, good point. This is sort of the insight I was fishing for when I asked the "why hasn't this been marked solved?" question that somehow made me a "turd". :'(
