I was recently turned on to the treasurenet website. I am amazed and instantly fell in love. I read about coin roll hunting and decided to try it. Does anyone have any tips? How do I interact with the tellers? Do I tell them I search the rolls? Or do I have to make an excuse?
What do I look for besides the obvious? After reading some of your posts I have picked up some information. If you feel I am missing something please throw me a line.
Im 25 and recently started collecting coins.

Thanks a ton!!!

Hi Matt,

Welcome to TNET,as you have already noticed it's a great place with lots of information and friendly people.

I don't tell the bank tellers that I am coin roll hunting. I just walk in and ask if they have any halves (if that is what you want to search) available. Most banks will have pennies, nickels, and dimes available so when I ask for them I ask how much they can spare. Most of the tellers are freindly, once in a while you'll find one that doesn't like their job, just ignore them and move on to another bank. LOL There's plenty around. ;D

After a while if you keep going to some of the same banks asking to purchase coins again and again they may ask you if you search them. At that point I do tell them that I am trying to fill in my coin books,so yes I am searching the coins. I also let them know that I will not be returning the coins to their branch.

Don't forget to pick up the Red Book or the Blue Book at a coin shop. Either one is filled with lots of information to help you while searching. I would reccommend taking a look at the coin denomination in the book before serching thru them so you know which dates have errors etc...

Good luck and have fun! :)

Thanks for the tips. Can you go to any bank and get rolls? Or do you have to be a member?

I walk into every bank I see and ask for rolls and no I'm not a member of every bank. lol Most banks will sell them to you, there will be a few that will ask if you have an account. Those are usually the elderly women that don't like their jobs, sorry but it's true.

Penny, that is so true!

I did once have a younger lady ask me if I was a member. She said I had to be to do any business. I said, "to be honest, no I am not" She said I am now ;) and sold me a few hundred $$ in halves.

Howeburger: Every bank is different, just play it by ear. Most tellers do not like having half dollars in their bank. They are heavy and need to be counted so they are happy to unload them. Be friendly and always carry samples of what you are looking for. I carry a JFK half and a IKE dollar and show them.

When depositing coins be sure of your count and double check the teller. Just yesterday I brought back 26 rolls of halves to Wells Fargo. The young teller had trouble counting them and figuring out $260. She even asked me "are these half dollars?" (the paper wrappers say $10 half dollars)
(I guess she is not the shiniest coin in that bank ;D)

Welcome aboard Howeburger....Great advice you received above. I would like to reiterate what PW said....hit every bank you see.....you never know what it holds.....this way you miss nothing. Good luck and post those finds.
