A brass doohickey that's kind of pistol hammer shaped......

Found this the other day, it's brass, and when I first saw it in the hole I thought I had a pistol hammer, when I picked it up I though maybe for a toy gun, now I kind of think it's a tumbler for a lock of some sort. It's stamped either "761" or "781" on the other side, but I can't get a clear pic of the numbers. Anyway here's a pic, so any ideas welcome..... ( I already figured out the other thing is a dime for all you jokesters out there :laughing7: )

I think you are on the right track with a tumbler like thingy, but I don't know what it is for sure.

Remember those wooden doors at school that had the brass bar going across them you had to push to open the door?
I believe those latch mechanisms have a similar part. Being in the scrap business, I've taken apart quite a few of them. I just don't have
one now to check. Maybe someon could find a patent drawing on them?

Have you searched mortise locks? It reminds me of the lever parts inside but I dont see a match but there are many styles and manufacturers to search. Here are some examples. Antique Lock Parts

I've rebuilt a a few old mortise locksets, and don't remember a part quite like this one. That doesn't mean it's not from one though. That's as good a place as any to start.
