The two two big one are fakes. The two on the right are one of the other members re-chipping work, the rest all have a minor professional restoration done on them.

Would you please define 'rechipping' for me? Does it use 'old stone'? Does it result in a completely different typology, dramatically changing the shape of a point....or just 'touch up' the point, maybe fix up some damage?

Very interesting post, quito. I need to learn more about authentication, that's for sure...

The re chips are damaged artifacts that I had sent to a friend. He put new bases on them and sent them back.

I wonder how you can tell if a point is modern made or a legitimate artifact based on appearance alone?
Is it just the fact that the seller can not provide specific information as to when and where they were found?

Put a black light on them and you'll see the new chipping right away. Gary

to answer your first question, when you are familiar with the materials and items normally found in an area you are familiar with, it sure helps. Magnification really helps when something seems suspect. I do have a stereo microscope too.
Todds helpful tip works to show re-chipping very well. It can show other things as well to experienced users of the method.

second question,..... no, usually at the auctions I attended that information is not made available at the sellers request.

Buy the rock not the story

Hi nice group. I have to ask and please this take this as a legitimate question . I’ve metal detected for years and have found a few artifacts that are very rare and not perfect. I would never ever think of having any restoration because I believe it removes not only originality but it is alters what I found. Restoration usually does not add value and I believe makes the item kind of fake . I’ve now started “ arrowhead “ hunting and have found a few and even if they were some rare Clovis points would not think of having them touched. So my question is why do it?
They are awesome just the way you find them. Modern man’s touch only takes away from them. Anyway just a thought. Great grouping.

Well for starters none of these are personal finds and just a decision I make on worthy pieces. Also, the restorations I have done is always an addition that can be removed. In a sense this is leaving the artifact in original condition, it’s just been made to look like the maker intended for now.

i have come out very well on any trading I have done with restored points, the pieces were never misrepresented. The restorer provides before and after images showing and certifying the extent of the restoration.

i feel some slightly damaged pieces are just worthy of their original glory

On a separate note ... Gaspipe you should post your points under a new thread would love to see them
