Sunday morning looked sullen, cloudy. Eh. Let's go metal detecting.

Visited my little area where I found the merc and some wheaties on Friday and some silvers last year and was greeted by tons of wet, sloppy snow everywhere. Mike, aware of my intentions, called for an update. Snowy with tons of sloppy mud. Heavy snow that sticks to your coil and weighs the --deleted-- down. The kind of crap that can really make a guy cuss like a sailor.

Turns out he is heading over to the Trash Pit. I thought to myself, how bad would it be to swing in this mess, in an area as productive as the Pit? What a tease. I thought about the prospect all of two seconds before I packed up my gear and headed thataway.

Upon arrival, I was greeted not by snow and mud, but by glorious beautiful turf- mostly dry- and a newfound appreciation for the sun, which had just begun to shine through the grey clouds. How can one site differ from another that much? I mean, we're not talking across town or anything...strange days indeed.

Mike and Bill T showed up, and I was shown where some of the recent finds have been coming from. I couldn't ground balance the detector to save my life. This was definitely a trash pit. I had detected here before with Lowbatts a couple years ago, not in the same spot but nearby...and I thought THAT spot was trashy. Mainly, I was disgusted at the AMOUNT OF GARBAGE PEOPLE DUG UP AND JUST LEFT ON THE GROUND. For me to throw away. Thanks guys! Really appreciated that. No, I don't make myself believe that can tops are akin to silver dollars. Yeah, so the area is a lot cleaner now than it was before. I ended up with about twenty freshly-dug can tops that went straight into the garbage can.

Another honorable mention was the sight of some dude "performing" on another dude right in the Trash Pit. I've seen the Mushroom Hunters, we're all familiar with those guys. But there was a guy servicing another guy right where we were walking. Bill called them out amidst the felatio, and THAT was pretty effin' funny. ::shudder:: Yuck.

Anyway, yeah, no silver, but I dug a '25 buffalo that rang up as a quarter (??), some wheaties, and a Marine Corps button with intact shank. It was a lot of fun to be out with the bros, with great weather, and seeing some nice finds emerge.

I ended up leaving a little early with a pounding headache caused by dehydration. Damn, forgot the water. I forgot the Hostess Pudding Pie too. Those are required. Puddin' Pies and silver go hand in hand.

Until next time, happy hunting, good luck, and all that jazz,

Joe

Oh, I also found a marble.

Past, present, and future. More where that came from.

What's a pudding pie? It sounds like something that goes along with mushroom hunting.... just kidding. I like all your finds except the Jefferson Nickel, well, that and the mushroom folk. I don't like deep jeff's unless they are the silver ones. I guess its clad... I am not one that cares for the early date Jeff's like some. on the buffalo.

I was at the pit in Friday, and thought I saw the same thing happening. It was probably 150 yards away, so I couldn't tell for sure. Just turned around and went the other way as fast as I could. Perhaps arming ourselves with BB pistols and a well placed shot might deflate a mushroom.

Glad you got out though. I pick up all my trash I dig there, in fact my bag is still full of 50+ shotgun casings, etc... but if I see surface junk sometimes I'll pick it up, most time I leave it. There were a lot of those old can lids hovering on the surface all over the place there.

Hope you get some better hunts in without all the sideshows and lack of H20.

lol, yeah, I don't care that much for clad Jeffs either. I find a lot of them, and only scan them when they frame something nicer (i.e. silver or buffs, V's, etc). Same with wheaties, if all I find are wheaties, I generally don't bother scanning them. Generally.

I don't really care about the surface trash much...I see it a lot just like everyone else and deal with it. It's when I see them right next to big open holes, then it's kind of irritating. Namean?

Glad you made it on out bud and better you guys seen the show than me. :tongue3: Yea I call it the trash pit for a reason, I can empty my trash pouch 2 times with just the surface finds and not even make a dent in that place!!! :icon_pirat:

Upon unfortunate reflection, maybe now that the trash pit has been defiled (well its probably been defiled for decades... just think, those barbers and SLQ's may have come from mushroom hunters back in the day) it may have to be renamed the mushroom pit.

I had the heavy snow blues on Sunday, too. Kept me off of a private lot.

In the morning I had at least 3 inches of snow in my yard, and by 5 it was all gone. I hadn't seen it melt that fast before.

Nice group of coins, Joe!

Man, I'm sure glad I didn't stumble upon that interlude. :-\ ::)

Sounds like one hunt I'm glad I missed. You just can't un-see something like that.

Yeah, but there are those who do, apparently....

I'll save a pop tart for ya, Joe! I took a break to munch the the goodies and sat, well-hidden between two of the vehicles. Well you know that gaydar thing? In 15 minutes there must have been a dozen stop-gazers who had to know what I was eating and how, all fellas with a certain come-hither look. And there sat on the curb, sporting kneepads but flashing only edged weapons.

You guys can keep the trash pit, I'm going deep woods out this way where they never bother looking.

As long as your trash pit keeps giving up coins, you guys will keep going back.

Well, you had a good hunt for the most part :D (even without the pudding ;D)

I kicked the plugs back into around 20 or so holes that people had left wide open, and no, they weren't holes dug by critters. There were craters with trash next to them just about everywhere I looked. That says an awful lot about the person or persons that left them. I sure hope it isn't anyone we know!!!
