Your ivory carving is a beauty :hello2: I am not an expert but it seems to be Oriental in style and a
part of something. Can it be some furniture decoration?

Beautiful find and right up my experience. I know a lot about ivory, from Mastadon to modern. From elephant to walrus to hippo. I can even tell you if it is male or female elephant ivory.

I can not see in your picture well, but to confirm that it is elephant ivory for yourself, there should be some natural lines in the surface, more easily seen on rounded edges. There should be a nerve mark ( a dark dot) through the middle of the piece that you should see at the top and bottom, where the nerve of the tusk went through it. If it is hippo or walrus there will be no natural lines, maybe a nerve dot. I doubt it would be walrus, though, because of size.

To preserve it, a light natural oil should be rubbed on it, now that it has been exposed to the air.

I have been researching and could be a fragment above a nearby medieval church that is about 200 meters (the furniture during the late Middle Ages were made with ivory) may remodel the church after his remains were thrown into the river, the piece is undoubtedly Medieval . :read2:

I see a Ram's horn design in it. Does that hold any significance in Church design?
The condition, btw, for that age is remarkable. Maybe the water helped preserve it. If it had been exposed to air for all these centuries it certainly would be dark brown by now.

I'm very curious what you find out about this ivory piece. Please keep us informed.

Interesting Ivory piece :icon_thumleft:

Tell you a little about the history of this piece ...... It's a piece of clear manufacturing Medieval and belongs to the Romanesque style heavily influenced by the art of Al-Andalus (southern Spain) and Byzantine (Roman Medieval ) .this area belonged to the Carolingian empire between the ages 8 and 12 after christ. This area is rich in medieval buildings of that time and 200 meters is a small medieval church suffered many subsequent renovations and possibly belong to furniture piece conducted in Ivory medieval times, the piece is in good condition that was thrown into the river and stayed many years in the mud and water sealed and not left the old.and was possibly an artisan workshop in southern Spain that art are similar to those that were made in the synagogues and mosques in the southern Toledo, Cordoba and Granada.
Sorry for my bad English.
Greetings! :read2:
