Went to my campsite spot for a few hours after work yesterday. I've pretty much pounded the 2 most fruitful spots on the property and the finds are getting thin. On a good note, the area I've concentrated on so far is only 75 yrd x 75 yrd on a 75 acre property! After some more research, I've realized around 5,000 Union troops were staged at this property for a few days late in the war. The property owner is one of my good customers who has become a good friend over the years. He and his wife have a twin boy and girl, age 7. It always kills me when the parents ask me, "are you sure its ok if the kids hang out with you while you hunt?". I think to myself, of course!! They are a lot better company than most of the clowns I hang out with!!
As all 7 yr old kids are, their attention span is only good for a half hour or so. But they have a blast using the pinpointer and think its hysterical when they see me cringe and flinch when they wave their mini shovels over the coil when I'm not paying attention.
So...yesterday, the little boy stuck around a little bit longer than usual, as his sister had bailed out 15 minutes into the hunt. I was determined to find at least a bullet while he was around this time to keep him interested. About that time, I get that deep, solid beautiful tone in my ears and thought "there it is!". I told him, "I think this is a good one, buddy!" Dig out a nice 5" deep plug and let him put the pinpointer down in the hole and it lit up like a car alarm. I used my knife and poked down another inch or two and pryed out the minie and popped it in his hands! The look on his face was priceless! He turns and sprints back to the house yelling to his Mom he had found a "cybul war bullet". She came outside and both of them came back over to where I was kneeling, grinning ear to ear. She had the bullet in her hand, looking at it and asking me how deep it was, what kind it was, union or confederate?, etc. I wasn't really looking at it in her hand as I was filling back the hole, when she said " why is the bottom covered in crust?" I look up and noticed the nipple base on the the bullet and realized it was a cleaner. She hanede it back over and I rolled it between my fingers enough to break away some dirt and saw it had the zinc discs still intact! It was a flawless, dropped Type I cleaner. I told them what I knew about the cleaner bullets and the little boy looked proud as can be. I can't lie, part of me thought " man, that would be a perfect one to put in my display case" but the best part was seeing how thrilled that kid was to have found something so cool. When I left, both mom and dad came out and thanked me so much for letting the kids tag along, and I kept telling them I'm the one that's thankful. So, long story short...I learned yesterday how important and gratifying it is to get kids involved in what we do!

Ps. I'm still kicking myself for not getting a picture of the young one with his bullet! But here are some pics of they other finds from yesterday. Thanks for reading!

Good job Flathead25... there's more cleaners out there for you. Good things come to those who share in the hunt.
