My first Standing Liberty Quarter was found after a storm near an 18 inch cut at Long Beach Long Island. It was blackened from the salt water and had no date. That was back in the mid 80's. I have found a few more since then but most had their dates worn off. The SLQ was minted from 1916 until 1930, with no quarters being minted in 1922. The early design of the quarter would allow the date to be worn prematurely. The date was sunk into the pedestal upon which Lady Liberty Stands, in 1925. It seemed to correct the wear problem. I was really pleasantly surprised earlier this year when I recovered this 1920 SLQ from a park in The Bronx earlier this year.

By the way, Sculptor Herman Atkins MacNeill , who designed the SLQ lived in College Point, Queens, N.Y.
