So, I'll make it quick..just a few.i figured it'd be easier to ask them all in one place instead of posting a new topic for each.

1) The coil cover. Use it, right? From what I've read it doesn't hurt anything so why not protect my coil.

2) Is it alright to run my chord this way? There's enough slack to allow the coil to fully pivot without putting stress on the connection. I remember reading that this may potentially cut down false signals.

3) When I took my coil cover off today I noticed its leaving a small impression on the coil itself or rather the coating on the outside of the coil. I'd imagine this is typical.

4) And lastly, the source of my insanity the past week or so.... these little ferrous rocks. Our yard has these buried throughout and they're also all over the driveway. Not only does it throw an iron grunt but it also randomly signals as a coin or a pulltab! It jumps all over the place. Is there anything I can do to discriminate out these small rocks without missing my desired targets, which is pretty much anything but these rocks. I've been playing with the sensitivity and notching out the lowest iron signal.

I know a big thing I need to do is bench test. I haven't had a chance to yet. I'm also very much aware that I just need hours in the field, there's just no substitute for that. I appreciate any help you guys are willing to offer. Thanks!

Those are called hot rocks, probably from when people in the area heated with coal or if your driveway was once paved with cinders. Many hot rocks ring in as a high tone, I watch the target ID on my screen and if it is jumpy and I know I am in an area of hot rocks I do not dig it unless I am bored are just have the urge to dig "just in case" I simply hate hot rocks.

And when it rains my machine goes twice as nuts!

I do not use coil covers but most of my sites are mainly grassy areas. If I hunted rocky terrain I would invest in some covers.

Coil covers-If you have one use it. No need to take it off. The only time I ever taken it off is after water hunting when I suspected sand/water got under the coil. Don't worry about the imprrssion.

Cable-that looks fine.

Clean your coil and cover after every hunt . You do not know if you got any sand or dirt in the coil cover effecting performance . I do not think your detector is water proof ? Do you have any overhead power lines or a cell phone tower near by ? EMI could also be apart of the storm making your detector false . Lightning in the storm that is . You will have to deal with hot rocks unless you step up your detector .

Thanks for the replies guys. I typically pull the cover every couple of hunts and wash it out and check the coil. As far as the hot rocks go it's something I'm just going to have to hunt with and learn their language. It's aggravating now but in the end I think I'll benefit from it.
