A few teeny tiny Tennessee arrowheads..

Hey T-Net artifact collectors. We have been covered up with rain here in Tennessee and today was no diffrent. I always enjoy cruising this forum and seeing all the diffrent types of arrowheads posted and all the experts advice. So here I am .I thought I might post just a few of the little ones that are common to this area. When hunting you have to flip everything as sometimes what looks like a flake will end up being a point. I hope to learn to take pics in the field this summer. These are just a few I have found they are mostly guntersville and hamiltons. I tried to take a picture of the sides to show how paper thin they can be. I do not consider value that much but do admire the craftsmanship of the smaller arrowheads. Theory has it many of these small points were true arrow heads and used when in battle? I have been wrong before so appreciate any advice. Thanks for a fun forum.

Great points, TnMountains. You must ask yourself, would I want to be shot with any of those? The projectile points could all be used in a fight. The popular belief a long time ago was that the tiny points were 'bird points'. (Spent a lot of time hunting birds, I guess) The bigger points were 'War Arrowheads'. (Atl-atl dart points) Knife blades were 'spear points'. And for some reason, the points that were small and very serrated were called 'fishing arrowheads'. Of course, we could have used points for whatever purpose was at hand, just to confound the archaeological record.

True Rginn. Have heard the concept of wounding with a point breaking off after penetration. Similar to warfare where we use ammo that will wound slow you down and not always kill right away but infection would get you in time. They knew that also. I drove some fint up into my foot by accident one day on the river. It took a long long time to heal. But then I have seen a mid size point drove into human skull and the person lived with the skull healing around the embedded point. Imagine living your life with that sticking out of your head. My personal opinion is they made what worked for the time frame and enviroment they lived in.Thanks for your thoughts.

Cool finds! It is an interesting subject. When I jumped in the game a few years ago, someone on here, I think it was neanderthal, said that a lot of points were knives. I have posted everything good the crew has found since then and almost all the knapped stuff look like knives. I think we only have a few projectiles. I reckon if you don't have much flint, you can always kill critters with a sharp stick, but it's hard to cut him up with one.

You nailed it on the knifes bean man.Everyone sees a small point and thinks birds and fish. Here they used nets as we find the stone net weights. They also used indigenous bambo to make three pronged gigs for fish. I am sure they were very adapt and leather and a rock for birds.
Some of the real early sites seem to only have like one type of point in them.We wonder if this is because that is all they knew in their small isolated world or is it because that is what worked for the quarry at the time. When you hunt and gather every days meal it hard for creativity to happen so you just do what works and eat.LOL Sorry for the long winded post. But I enjoy the thought process.

Re: A few teeny tiny Tennessee arrowheads..

That is also how i used to think, spears and never knives. I read alot where the majority of intact arrows found , very few have been fitted for a stone point, like this one cave somewhere over here, 14,000 arrows were found, and only like 3 or 3% (some very low low number) was notched for stone. Crazy, the more you get into the subject the more you learn. Like some of the gypsum cave points i have, i still cant see how the heck the were secured securly on the arrow, with such a nubby stem. Maybe thats why im finding so many ;D TN, i always hear of stories like yours sifting 30 points in a day. And i see old collections, massive ones................im like geeze, why didnt my parents/g parents go collecting when it was good. I have to work 4 times as hard as people back then, and i can only guess that my kiddo will have to bust butt even harder. everything is getting covered up, i know of sites right nextdoor to houses, in neighbor hoods, in citys......... its crazy, and sucks

I think now days you just have to hunt smarter with old maps and such. There is an old creek in N.Ga we have heard of things coming out of. I cant seem to find anything there. Pretty much never went back. A guy pulled out an 18 inch blade paper thin the other day from the creek. It was broke in the ground but he had both pieces. Was right by the highway !! :icon_scratch:
I like the bends in creeks and river best in august with low water.

Re: A few teeny tiny Tennessee arrowheads..

Hey, you forget to resize my fav one, here ya go
A easy free program is infranview, i always size 650 on my posts, and on TN you can upload six at a time that size. If you get that program, i can help you understand it, very simple.

Re: A few teeny tiny Tennessee arrowheads..

Thanks Chong. I have a mac and the pictures look ok on my monitor but did not realise they were to big to post. I see you re-did it in 76.42 KB. Will that size work for everything? Thanks again I like that little one to. I remember the day I found it and more importantly where. lol
