A First for me, thrift store silver.

Found my first ever thrift store silver today. Went to the parking lot of this shopping center near me to sell a graphing calculator I bought the other day for a $49 profit. Popped into the thrift store real quick cause I got there a little early and found this for 99c. It's weighted but should still easily be an ounce there. It's dented so I won't feel bad busting it up to get the plaster out, into the scrap silver pile it goes.



Was feeling pretty good about that so I decided why not take a chance on a plated piece, it looked interesting and I know sometimes plated stuff can be worth it so I thought what the heck. It's marked Reed & Barton 105, haven't seen many sell for much on ebay but there are a couple of them up for $30 BIN right now. If it doesn't sell it's still a nice fruit bowl for $3 I'm not worried.

Crush that Compote I say. Weighted pieces are a detriment to the works in fine silver and should be melted down to make a new masterpiece. If the R&B plate has no scratches on the inside its should sell well. Rare to find not all scratched up.

How can you tell a weighted piece from solid? How was it marked?

Ding ding ding, yep marked right on there "sterling, weighted reinforced". It's impossible for me to get a picture of it.

Its very easy to get the non silver stuff out. A pair of the often seen short candle sticks are together around an ounce of sterling scrap I've found. I've got those for as low as two bucks a pair and herd some folks have found them for a quarter each at yard sales. They all must say 'sterling' on them before you pop for them. If no 'sterling' its plate silver. Don't buy those.
