Hope everyone is holding up well under the virus situation.

A friend of my found this coin in Canada and was unable to make a positive id any help would be appreciated. It obviously has some serious age so suspect it was either lost or stolen from a coin collection.

I suspect it's European origin.

creskol,

No problem a few people mentioned possibly viking, Danish or old English. Hopefully some of our coin wizzards can figure it out.

Good morning Bill. :hello:
My first thought was an English Celtic Tribe coin from the UK.
What type of metal is it, silver or bronze?

Due to it being so clean, do you think it might be a replica? :icon_scratch:

I don't recognize it, so it's not British.

What I can tell is that its an imitation/copy of whatever ancient coin its 'trying' to be. IMO not ancient.

The stag looks to me like a loose copy of the stylised form used on some Viking era coinage. This one is the Danish King Godfred and circa AD800. I would be sure it's not authentic and more likely a fantasy design rather than an actual replica copy.

EDIT: @Mackaydon found similar examples while I was faffing around.

Makes sense its more fantasy than copy, as its an easy way around the Laws. ie. no need to put 'copy' or any other identifying words stamped on it.

Folks,

A big thumbs up for all your imputs. I already advised the finder that it was a modern replica or copy as per Crusader's advice. It kind of looked the part just from the design being overly neat and raised rather than struck into the metal as you'd expect.

Take care and stay safe during this crazy time we are all living through.
