I went to the campground with my dad (time4me) on monday and I found a few firsts. I found the older boy scouts neckerchief slide (my dad keeps complimenting me on how it is in very nice condition for its age, with no rust on the back bar). I found an old Ronson Varaflame Windlite lighter, and a piece of a bracelet which my dad and I think is silver and the stamp on one of the end pieces reads 800. Could this mean silver?

[UPDATE: thanks to Chefman in a post below, we now know this is a puzzle ring - see new pics in post further below]

The best finds of the day were my first ever mercury head dime. After I found the dime I rechecked the hole and there was still something there. It turned out to be a 1939 nickel.

Here are the pics...

Re: A good end to the year - my first merc

Wow! congrats on the first of many Merc dimes. And your bracelet is silver, too!!

The proportion of silver in these alloys is stated in terms of fineness, which means parts of silver per thousand of the alloy. Sterling silver contains 92.5 percent of silver and 7.5 percent of another metal, usually copper; i.e., it has a fineness of 925. Jewelry silver is an alloy containing 80 percent silver and 20 percent copper (800 fine). Therefore, 900 silver is 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper.

Well what do you know? It is a puzzle ring!!! My dad finally got it all put together the right way (we think), and polished it up a bit more.

Thanks to Chefman, I now know that I found a RING, not a bracelet. That is so cool!!!

Congratulations on the silver. I can't wait to find an old coin, beside a wheat. Those puzzle rings are neat too. My ex old lady had one that i never could put back together. She could always get it right back together though.

Happy New Year!!!! 2009.

nice job on the mercury dime and the puzzle ring@ What a way to end the year!!! :)

Nice hunt with your father kenny. Nice first on your merc and a cool looking ring :icon_sunny:

I had a ton of fun detecting with you Kenny, and the look on your face when you got that merc was priceless!!! The puzzle ring is very cool - I'm glad someone here was able to identify it for you. I was sure it was a piece from a bracelet or a necklace.

Looking forward to hunting with you again soon little buddy! Maybe this weekend!!

Dad

NICE COIN AND PUZZLE RING. BEST OF LUCK IN 09.

Nice hunting, Kenny!!

Congrats on all your great finds, including your first Merc!   Mercs are my favorite coin. ;D

That puzzle ring is a rare find, and silver on top of it all! It looks like you did a good job recovering it. It seems like it would be easy to break if you weren't careful digging.

I also see that you are keeping the family tradition alive by starting a collection of Scout slides. I like finding them too, especially the older ones like that one of yours.

I'm glad to see you and dad got out together!
