I managed about 4 hours today on my Fave field. The soil was very sticky, but at least it wasn't raining. I found lots of buttons, some good but most were toast. Also a silver Roman and a hammered (another Elizabeth 1st Half groat), plus lots of other bits, some identified, some not. Now the pics

That was worth the mud! Now i can imagine why it is Your fave field.... I like those fields where it's possible to get such a range of finds. Too bad that the denarius is not that good. For what were these copper rings?

Re: A great range of finds from my fave field

Hi mate !
The last lead seal with the inscription (Sucres) is a commercial seal of Sugar 19th century. In Catalan and French Sucre means sugar.
Good Hammered .

Next time I will take a picture of my boots, about 10 pounds of mud on each :laughing7: .The denarius was a bonus, so I'm not complaining :tongue3:

Sorry Westfront, I forgot to mention the copper alloy rings. They had many uses, Dorset buttons and harness furniture are just 2, but not Celtic ring money. Some smaller rings may even be from mail armour :read2:

What an awesome day, you machine must have been ringing all the time!! Fun fun :hello2: :hello2:

I love the hammereds from UK they are beautiful and yours looks like very good shape
What do you think happened with the roman silver? Bad quality silver? Or just ploughed too many times?

Congratulations and merry Xmas

Very interesting finds Ian! :o Looks like you must have dug up half the field! :laughing7:
These two pieces are interesting, what type of material are they made from?
. . . they look like wax letter seals to me? :icon_scratch:

Have a great Christmas mate!

Hi Dave and Merry Christmas to you and yours

The items in question are if fact screw tops for beer bottles. Have a look at the link http://www.bl.uk/onlinegallery/onlineex/evancoll/a/014eva000000000u06273000.html
We find quite a lot of them in the fields over here, I guess the farm workers used to have a bottle of beer with their lunch back in the day ;D

Re: A great range of finds from my fave field

Well, we ALL know why the farmers all allow you to hunt their fields......they get a free plowing of the fields.
What a nice assortment of finds. I like the artifacts as much as I do the coins, anymore.
Merry Christmas. And a God-blessed 2012 to you and your family.

Re: A great range of finds from my fave field

When I was detecting I found what I thought was some form of identity disc, it was covered in some kind of black gunk and when I got home I just popped it in a bowl of "Limelite". And completely forgot about it :laughing7: . I saw it again on the window sill last night and the Limelite had turned black, when I had washed off the remaining fluid a silver coin was in my hand. It seems to be a Louis XV of France, Bourges - Ecu, 1730. That day just got even better
