could have been from any of the early explorers or even someone who brought it over when they immigrated here. Gold would have been saved and it is not unlikely that someone had saved it in the family for a generation or so....

So true if folks are going to the promise land, they would have a poke hidden away.

Another theory is they found a little hoard and it gave them the means to travel.
There's so many different versions of how it got there-except for actually having it in a box with date attached.
