Took advantage of this last reprieve from winter to get another constitutional walk.

Had a fine day. Enough finds to keep me busy and a nice find or two:

Still don't know my bullets but the one on the right seems older.

Seems like an older style button too.

But, there was a find that helped me to walk away smiling today.

I can't remember, have I ever told you about how this sight
just NEVER gets old with me? ;)

Next to positive it's silver but my tired ole eyes just can't make this
mark out. If I hold it one way it looks like 545, another 895 and yet another 645.
This is the best I can capture. Maybe someone who's more familiar with the possibilities
can give a hint. I'll try testing tomorrow.

In any case, a wonderful finish to the year if it's the last one I get.

Oh yeah! The surprise find? Well, while I was sitting in my easy chair, my keys fell down between the cushions.

When I reached in to fish them back out, I found this.

Now, no, my chair is NOT that old! :)
It's one of the indian heads I had been working with to clean up from way back in the summer sometime. I'd never missed it!
Got soooo many of them I guess. LOL

I still say you need to keep a very diligent eye on the finds we dig up. They weren't just lost way back when. They ESCAPED! They did not want to be found and will keep trying to get away if not watched! If you don't believe me, just watch how many of them literally jump out of your hands and try to get back in the hole! Or when you get them home, watch how many try to jump off a table and roll across the floor to try and reach the heat vents.

Although, there is another possibility in my house.

Of course! ;) LOL

Thanks for stopping by!

It doesn't make sense to me that anyone would put black onyx in white gold. It isn't a precious stone, and silver shows it off just fine. On the other hand, have you looked closely to make sure it isn't black opal? Does it have any color flashes? Either way, it is still a nice showy piece!

I agree w/ Jewelerguy on your bullets. Save your lead-- B.O. has signed new legislation that will close the only remaining lead processing plant in the U.S.

For as long as I've been finding rings, one would think I'd know the possibilities. Well, alas, I don't. (blush)
I had not even considered an opal! Would color flashes mean it might be? How do I test?

Thanks!

If the stone is clean (it looked nicely polished but still dirty in the picture) just old it under a desk lamp and rotate it a little. Opal will 'flash' with specks of rainbow color. The stronger the color and the brighter the flash, the more valuable the stone is. Black opal is usually a doublet or triplet-- two or three stones (respectively) bonded together to strengthen the piece and give it more color. Opal itself is pretty soft, and very sensitive to heat - which dries it out and causes it to 'craze' where it will either crack like a windshield or else get milky, either of which destroys the stone. I'm thinking by the solid black color of your stone it won't be opal, but those are things you'll want to know if you have one. A jeweler would know right away if its opal, or could show you examples.
