Went out in the ridiculous Virginia heat to a private property permission in Fredericksburg. Decent albeit extremely hot day...

Three of the buttons (look to be General Service before cleaning) came out of the same hole, the other two were just a few inches away.

A new one for me (I am by no means a Civil War expert) company letter or a number perhaps? It measures 1 inch long, looks like a number 1 however could also be the letter “I” as the corner is a little jagged and could have broken off.

A percussion cap and what appears to be a rather large percussion cap.

The three nails, same size and threaded came out of a hole about 12 inches away from the buttons and at approximately the same depth...however I don’t know if they are of Civil War time frame.

Looks like you found a good spot and had a great day digging. I haven’t been in a spot like that for a while. Congratulations on the good haul.

I can’t be sure without a better picture and I am no civil war expert either, but sometimes the copper outer shell of a modern copper jacket bullet will separate from the lead. I have found a lot of them over the years and they look very much like what you have there. I hope I am wrong and it is from a cannon or something else cool like that. If you can see rifling grooves on the outside it is most likely from a modern bullet.

Good luck and keep swingin.

Thank you for the words of encouragement, although I suspect you might be correct. Don’t see any rifling markings on it but it does look like what you describe!

Happy Hunting!

Excellent finds! The buttons and lead are cool CW relics!

Man I envy you guys that hunt would be a record for me. We have the same heat/ humidity and not as near the CW action. It’s rough out here for civil war relics but I find my share except it took me a 2 years to find what you just found. Congratulations

Very nice. cant wait to see those buttons cleaned up

I'd say that was worth being out in the heat for. Those are some very nice Civil War relics, and I like those buttons.

Well done. Nice handful of lead and those buttons should cleanup nicely. Congrats

Awesome finds! Congrats!

Hot spot for sure!!! Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Great area you have for digging, good luck on future hunts! :icon_thumleft:

You got that right about the heat! You are a better man than me, as I walk out the door and turn back around immediately, haha! I have a 10 acre property in Ashland I need to search, but its just too damn hot! Nice finds and keep them coming.

Wow thats a haul Id be out in some serious heat if I could find stuff like that. Well done

I’m from CA so this is a real struggle! At least it was somewhat shaded. 10 acres should be a lot of fun, that’s a huge track!

Awesome site to be hunting, that's some great recoveries & hope to see the buttons after cleaning, congrats on all
